A Mother's Perspective: Polishing Off Juvenile Diabetes

Appreciate the Good Times

My son, Aidan, was diagnosed with type1 diabetes when he was 23 months old. It was a very scary and devastating diagnosis, but we soon learned more than we ever thought we could know about diabetes.

He was hospitalized for three days, and I was scared to bring him home because I thought, "how are we going to do this?" But now, a few months later, we have had many scary ups and downs with Aidan's blood sugar. We see his doctor every three months and keep in close phone contact with him. We first realized something was wrong when we noticed his vary saturated diapers, extreme thirst, and noticed he felt lighter. I was scared, but knew we had to do something. So, we took him to the emergency room later that afternoon. His blood sugar was more than 600 and being in the medical field, I knew he was definitely in trouble.

Hearing the other stories on this Web site brings tears to my eyes. I want everyone who had a child with diabetes to know that we just need to support our kids and talk to them and other families. It will help us get through bad times (learn) and help us to appreciate all the good times.
